I would like to share something that has made a significant difference for our family.
My son, David, participates in scheduled Zoom sessions on Saturdays, and we have found them to be incredibly beneficial. David is non-verbal and communicates primarily through his communication device. Like many children on the spectrum, he thrives on structure and routine. Weekends can sometimes be challenging because the usual school routine is absent, and it is not always easy to keep him cognitively stimulated and meaningfully engaged throughout the day.
The Saturday Zoom sessions have become an important part of our routine. They keep David engaged, stimulated, and occupied while also giving our family some much-needed breathing space. We typically book a three-hour slot, which is broken down into 40-minute sessions with 10-minute breaks in between. David uses a laptop and headphones, and members of his team rotate throughout the session using the Zoom platform.
Activities are tailored to his needs and interests and may include word searches, puzzles, drawing-by-number activities, baking cupcakes together online, educational games, and other engaging tasks. David genuinely enjoys the sessions, and by the time they are finished, a large portion of his Saturday afternoon has been productively and happily occupied.
Achieving this level of independence did not happen overnight. We intentionally included Zoom sessions as part of David’s programme and practised regularly during the week in preparation for Saturdays. Through consistency and repetition, he became comfortable with the format and learned what was expected of him.
Sharing this achievement brings me great joy because the benefits extend beyond David. When he is engaged and supported, I have more time to spend with my other children. I can attend to household responsibilities, enjoy a cup of tea with friends, or simply take a moment to recharge. Many parents of children on the spectrum understand how demanding caregiving can be and how difficult it can be to find time for themselves or other family members.
We have even incorporated Zoom sessions into family holidays. While David is engaged online with his team, we are able to cook, relax, and enjoy our surroundings knowing that he is happy, supported, and participating in meaningful activities.
The children supported by Star Academy are all unique. They range in age from 17 months to individuals in their twenties, and they vary greatly in their abilities, learning styles, and support needs. Every child follows an individualised programme designed specifically for them.
I wanted to share our experience because if these sessions can provide such value for David, they may also benefit your child. Additional online sessions can provide structure, engagement, skill development, and meaningful cognitive stimulation outside of regular programme hours.
If you would like to explore a laptop-based lesson programme for your child, or if you believe your child may benefit from online Zoom sessions, please speak to your Case Manager or contact our Scheduler to discuss available options.
