Goal: To create a visual calendar where your child can lift a flap each day to mark the passage of time and reveal a fun message or picture.
Time to Create: 30-60 minutes
Materials You’ll Need:
- A large piece of poster board or thick paper (A2 or A3 size works well).
- Construction paper or sticky notes (for the flaps).
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils.
- Stickers (optional, but highly recommended!).
- Glue stick and/or tape.
- Scissors.
- A ruler (to keep things neat).
Step 1: Set Up the Calendar Base
- Choose Your Title: At the top of your poster board, write a clear and positive title. Examples: “Countdown to School!”, “[Child’s Name]’s School Adventure!”, or “See You Soon, Kindergarten!”
- Decide on the Countdown Number: Decide how many days you want to count down. 14 or 21 days is a great starting point—long enough to build a routine but not so long that the child loses interest.
- Draw the Grid: Use your ruler and a marker to draw a grid of squares on the poster board. You need one square for each day of your countdown. Make the squares large enough to write in and cover with a flap (e.g., 3×3 inches or 8×8 cm).
- Number the Squares: Number the squares in reverse order. Start with your total number of days (e.g., 14) in the first box and end with “1” in the last box. This helps your child see the numbers getting smaller as school gets closer.
Step 2: Create the “Surprises” Under the Flaps
This is the most important part for building positive associations with school. Before you attach the flaps, decide what goes in each square. The goal is to have a small, positive “reveal” each day.
- Write a Message: In some squares, write simple, encouraging words. Examples: “You are a great friend!”, “Learning is an adventure!”, “Your new teacher can’t wait to meet you!”
- Draw a Picture: Draw simple, happy pictures like a smiley face, a star, a school bus, or an apple.
- Add a Sticker: Place a single, fun sticker in the middle of the square.
- Plan an Activity: In the squares for specific days, write a preparatory activity. This breaks down the big task of “getting ready” into small, fun steps.
Activity Ideas to Write in the Squares:
- “Today we pick out your new backpack!”
- “Let’s practice our school morning routine!”
- “Time to buy your cool new school shoes!”
- “Let’s read a book about starting school.”
- “Meet the Teacher Day!” (Place this on the correct date).
- “Pack a practice lunch in your new lunchbox!”
Step 3: Make and Attach the Flaps
- Cut the Flaps: Cut out squares from your construction paper or use sticky notes. The flaps should be just large enough to cover the squares on your grid.
- Number the Flaps: Write the corresponding countdown number on the outside of each flap. So, the flap labeled “14” will cover the square where you wrote your first activity.
Step 4: Decorate and Introduce the Calendar!
- Add Extra Fun: Decorate the empty space on your poster board with more drawings, stickers, or even a photo of your child or their new school.
- Introduce the Calendar: Present the finished calendar to your child with excitement. Explain how it works: “Every morning after breakfast, we will lift one flap to see how many days are left until your school adventure begins!”
Your countdown calendar is now ready! By making it a consistent part of your daily routine, you provide a predictable and reassuring structure that helps turn school-related anxiety into positive anticipation.
